On Jan. 23, 1943, Air-Sea Rescue Pinnace No.1289, while on a course 15 miles south of Saint Catherine’s Point, Isle of Wight, was engaged by four Focke-Wulf 190s. Four diving attacks were made by the fighters, who pressed home their attacks at very close range. In these attacks, out of ten men onboard, one was killed and six others wounded. The pinnace barely made it back to the coast, and was beached in a sinking condition.
